About Us

The Aboriginal Family Violence Prevention and Legal Service Victoria (FVPLS Victoria) provides assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims/survivors of family violence and sexual assault and works with families and communities affected by violence.

The FVPLS Victoria head office is in Collingwood, covering the Melbourne area. We have an office and staff in Mildura, in Warrnambool, covering the Barwon South West Region and in Bairnsdale covering the Gippsland region. Click here for office locations.

FVPLS Victoria will give telephone and/or face to face legal advice to victims/survivors of family violence and sexual assault. Counselling  is also available in these locations.

Our objectives are:

  • To provide assistance to victims of family violence;
  • To reduce the incidence of violence and abuse in communities through education and advocacy;
  • To increase the recognition of the problem of violence and abuse in communities through community education and advocacy;
  • To facilitate long term solutions to violence and abuse in communities.

FVPLS Victoria is an Aboriginal community controlled organisation established in 2002 to provide assistance to victims/survivors of family violence and sexual assault and to work with families and communities affected by violence.

We provide free legal advice, referrals, ongoing casework and court representation, and assist in the following areas:

  • Intervention orders;
  • Family Law;
  • Child Protection;
  • Victims' compensation;
  • Other legal problems arising from family violence.

Go to our Legal Services page for more information about support available.

FVPLS Victoria also engages in community legal education and community development activities, as well as policy and law reform directed towards systemic change.

We are funded through a range of sources including the Commonwealth Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Victoria Legal Aid, Department of Justice Victoria and Department of Human Services Victoria. We also receive project grants from various other private and public funding sources.
