About the conference

The Aboriginal Family Violence Prevention and Legal Service Victoria (FVPLS Victoria) appreciates the vital assistance of colleagues and partner organisations that helped us to plan a successful and informative conference. We greatly appreciate the generous financial support from our conference sponsors and supporters.

Standing Firm for Change: A Journey to Justice was a national conference organised by FVPLS Victoria , an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisation. The conference focused on access to justice issues for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander* victims/ survivors of family violence and sexual assault.

The conference, held in November 2012, was a significant opportunity for Aboriginal community members, leaders, workers and policy makers to confront the complexities of family violence in Aboriginal communities and propose resolutions for change. It attracted Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members, mainstream and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service providers, policy makers, Magistrates, Judges and Lawyers, Government representatives and academics. The conference coincided with FVPLS Victoria's 10 year anniversary.

FVPLS Victoria is committed to improving law and justice responses and accessibility to the legal system for Aboriginal victims of family violence and sexual assault. The conference provided a platform for influencing systemic change and to improving law and justice outcomes for Aboriginal people and in particular for Aboriginal women and children nationally.

In 2010, FVPLS Victoria produced a policy paper series that examined key social justice and policy issues that impacted upon Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims/survivors of family violence. The themes and issues identified during the Standing Firm for Change: A Journey to Justice conference will be used to further inform, guide and extend our policy advocacy activities.

Through our Policy and Development Unit, Community Legal Education program and Early Intervention and Prevention program, FVPLS Victoria is committed to working with Koori communities to stand firm against family violence.
